Individual counseling is provided to students on an as-needed basis. It may be crisis oriented (i.e. based on the student’s current emotional state - someone who is having a bad day or a pet dies) or it may be ongoing (i.e. the student works with an outside professional and I will help to support those goals in the school setting).

The need for counseling services in the school environment is usually determined by whether a particular issue is interfering with a student’s school functioning. The following issues may be appropriate for individual counseling:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Grief/Loss
  • Social Skills
  • Unexplained change in behavior
  • ADHD skills training
  • Other - not sure what is going on

The counselor will contact parents via phone or email after the initial session occurs or after a written referral is made. If counseling services are to be continued on a regular basis, a consent form will be signed and the counselor will review the limits of
confidentiality in the school setting with both the parents and the student.

Group counseling will be initiated based on the shared issues and needs of individuals with a grade or developmental level. Obviously, maintaining confidentiality can be more challenging in a group setting. The limits of confidentiality are always reviewed with students and parents before a group session were to occur. Parental consent is required for participation in counseling groups.

Common group topics may include:

  • Divorce/Diverse Families
  • Grief
  • Self-esteem
  • Social Skills
